FAQ FOR THE CANCELLATION OF THE 2020 MIDWEST OLD THRESHERS REUNION

Why has the 2020 Midwest Old Threshers Reunion been cancelled?

For several months, the Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Board of Directors and staff have been working tirelessly to address challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Reunion has been faced with guidelines for six-foot social distancing, protocols for sanitizing and cleaning, greater financial implications for the Association, and the loss of key volunteers, coordinators, and some of our civic groups.

In addition, we have considered the overall health and safety of our entire Old Threshers family, the Mount Pleasant community, residents of Henry County and all surrounding counties. Indeed, the health implications of holding the Reunion could have a far-reaching impact.

The Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Board of Directors met on Tuesday, June 23 to decide the fate of the 2020 Old Threshers Reunion on September 3 – 7. At that meeting, the Old Threshers Board of Directors voted to cancel the 2020 Old Threshers Reunion.

We will now shift our direction to working on the Old Threshers Reunion to be held on September 2 – 6, 2021.

The Board of Directors, staff, and many volunteers wish that we could have provided another great Old Threshers Reunion for all of us this year. We will all get the chance to gather again at the 2021 Old Threshers Reunion September 2 – 6.

Why couldn’t we wait to decide?

We took all the time we could to come to our decision to be sure that we had looked at every aspect and reviewed the most current COVID-19 information.  In a typical year, preparing for an event of this scale and scope is a year-round operation and a very large undertaking by us and all of our partners.  While many of us have been able to pause some things over the past months, we can’t hold off any longer.  Supplies, food group orders, equipment orders, travel plans, staffing and more all need to be finalized now.

While we don’t know what the beginning of September will bring, we do know that we have to make decisions based on what we know today, not what we hope it will be like in September.

Did you consider modifying the Reunion by limiting attendance, instituting social distance guidelines, and requiring face masks and temperature checks?

Looking at all the different ways to make the Old Threshers Reunion under the COVID-19 limitations was extremely challenging.  As we reviewed the countless potential scenarios and determined that first, these were not feasible and, second, the Reunion under these restrictions is not the Old Threshers Reunion we know and love.

Here are some of the things we had trouble imagining:

* Face masks, temperature checks and other CDC and public health guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting.

* Hand sanitizer and masks for visitors and volunteers.

* Having to Social Distance during our events including the Harvest Day Parade, Daily Cavalcade of Power, and Country Music Shows, as well as on the ground trains, trolleys, shuttle buses and the carousel.

* Staffing our operation when a large portion of our volunteers are in high-risk groups

Could the Reunion be extended in days in order to space out the crowds?

Spacing out the Old Threshers Reunion is really difficult from a scheduling standpoint working around volunteers, school start dates, vendors, food operations, and entertainment. Then most of our farmer friends, who account for many of our volunteers and exhibitors, are getting ready to work hard in the fields feeding the world.

Why couldn’t the Reunion be postponed?

For many of the same reasons that it is not possible to extend the Reunion. There are no other dates that are feasible to squeeze in preparation for and production of an event of this size.  Because of this, we are not able to postpone the Reunion to later dates.  We will instead look forward to presenting the Old Threshers Reunion in its scheduled dates, September 2-6, 2021.

Who made the decision to cancel the Reunion this year?

The Old Threshers Board of Directors voted based on information compiled by the CEO and staff in the current COVID-19 limitations.

Has the Reunion ever been cancelled in the past?

The first show for the Old Threshers Reunion was held September 20-21, 1950 and has continued to go on for the last 69 shows until this year.  The 2020 Old Threshers Reunion marks the first ever canceled show.

How will Midwest Old Threshers survive without revenue from the 2020 Reunion?

There is no doubt that we will face extreme financial issues over the next year as a non-profit organization that lives for 360 days off income made during a five-day event. This year we have not been able to host any other smaller events that would have helped us to offset early expenses for the Reunion.

How can I still support the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion?

The continued support for Old Threshers can come in many different forms.  We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that welcomes your financial donations.  You can join the 110 Club.  You may also support the Old Threshers Foundation with your donations.

We will look forward to the support from dedicated visitors and volunteers in the upcoming year.

We hope you support and understand why we made the decision to cancel the 2020 show and help us stay positive.  We will gather again September 2-6, 2021.

What will happen to the Sweet 16 program and contestants?

We will have a 2021 Sweet 16 program and a 2021 Sweet 17 program for those young ladies that had signed up in 2020.  That will be an amazing amount of young ladies serving as hostess as we all gather again September 2-6, 2021.
